Each topic area is designed to be completed in 60-90 minutes when, where, and in whatever order makes sense for your current role.
This online self-paced course is available until May 1, 2026 and takes approximately five hours to complete.
Topics covered include:
Teaching
Teaching others while also practicing medicine and providing patient care can be challenging. In this unit, you will learn several proven teaching strategies and be introduced to foundational principles of adult learning.
Feedback
Writing evaluations and providing verbal feedback are essential parts of medical education. Being able to deliver effective feedback, at the right time, in the appropriate manner, for the benefit of iterative improvement is a skill and an art. In this section, you will learn the basic components of effective feedback and be introduced to successful strategies that you can incorporate into your own practice.
Supporting the Learner
Supporting learners through positive interactions and relationship building is a critical responsibility of any medical educator. Being aware of the prevalence of burnout, depression, and potential adverse personal and professional consequences is a good place to start. In this unit, you will learn about risk factors and review helpful strategies to support the learner.
Learning Environment
Educators can influence the learning environment in numerous ways. How, when, and where you ask a question, the nature and tone of your response, the effort you make to get to know your learners on a professional and personal level, and other factors add to or detract from the learning environment. In this section, you will be introduced to ways that YOU can contribute to an optimal learning environment.
Supervision
Clinical supervision plays a vital role in health professions education; it includes assessing and identifying a learner's strengths and weaknesses in order to guide trusted provision of autonomy while continually being mindful of patient safety. In this unit, you will review evaluation frameworks, principles for effective direct observation, and strategies to guide entrustment and levels of supervision.
